    The new residential program for Women & Their Children was opened at 2926 Harford Road, Baltimore, Maryland, in order to extend desperately needed services to that community.

    Second Genesis received a 1-year accreditation from the Commission on the Accreditation of Rehabilitative Facilities.

    The Second Genesis Adolescent Outpatient Recovery Program opened at 1721 Elton Road in Silver Spring, Maryland.
  • October 1997 
    The Adult Outpatient Program opened at 1320 Harvard Street, N.W. in Washington, DC.
  • June 1994 
    The therapeutic community in Anne Arundel County was separated into two distinct facilities, Anne Arundel North and Anne Arundel South, in order to better serve the large number of residents assigned to the facilities.
  • March 1994 
    Second Genesis was awarded a five-year federal grant to provide treatment for women and their dependent children (up to 10 years old) in the state of Maryland. The first residents were admitted on June 6 to the facility in Prince George's County, now named Second Genesis Mellwood House for Women and Their Children.
  • January 1992 
    Second Genesis EAST (Education, Addiction Services, Treatment) opened in Washington, DC on the St. Elizabeths Hospital Campus as the treatment component of the DC Initiative, a three-year federal research project on drug treatment strategies.

    A therapeutic community opened at 1320 Harvard Street, N.W. in Washington, DC. Second Genesis now had four facilities serving Maryland, Virginia and Washington, DC

    To expand the third therapeutic community, the original facility at 1013 King Street was merged with the 1001 King Street facility.

    Second Genesis increased treatment services to Montgomery County, Maryland, by opening a fourth therapeutic community at 14701 Avery Road in Rockville.

    A third residential therapeutic community opened at 1001 King Street in Alexandria, Virginia.
  • May 1972 
    Second Genesis expanded rehabilitation services to Prince George's County, Maryland, by opening a second therapeutic community at 301 Crain Highway in Upper Marlboro.
  • June 1971 
    Second Genesis separated from the Alexandria Community Mental Health Center to become Second Genesis, Inc., a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to serving the Greater Washington area.
  • April 1970 
    The first Second Genesis residential therapeutic community for the drug and alcohol abusers was established in Alexandria, Virginia at 1013 King Street.

    Second Genesis was founded as the drug abuse treatment component of the Alexandria Community Mental Health Center.

    The first drug abuse outpatient group was established at the Alexandria Community Mental Health Center in Virginia. This group would form the nucleus for the future Second Genesis therapeutic community.
