From the ripe age of nine, my drug use became an obsession and compulsion. The drugs prevented me from any time of spiritual and emotional growth. The next 27 years were a mess of repeating the same maladaptive behaviors – a type of insanity only an addict can relate to.
Luckily, I ended up in a five day detox center in Annapolis. From there, I was sent to Second Genesis’s house in Crownsville, Maryland. Those six months at Crownsville changed my life. There isn’t a single word in the dictionary that expresses the immense amount of gratitude felt for the individuals who have worked, and currently work, at the Crownsville facility.
Through following the suggestions of the Second Genesis Crownsville staff, I have become a responsible person. Today, I am a psychology graduate student and active member in a 12-step program with more self-efficacy and esteem than at any time other time on my life.
The struggle to remain clean from drugs is not as difficult as it was in those first days of abstinence; however, only through preventive maintenance will sobriety continue to become current reality.
Laying down drugs was the tip of the iceberg. Slowly but surely, more and more of the iceberg has been revealed and life has begun to blossom the way it should have so many years ago.
