Women & Children

Philosophy

Patients live in a safe environment while receiving integrated treatment. They leave the program with the ability to become stable, contributing members of society.

History

Since 1992 the Mellwood House, with its 67-acres of landscape, has healed thousands of women by allowing them to bring their children with them while receiving addiction treatment. With space for 38 women and 40 children, Mellwood provides women, with and without children, addiction services.

Clients

Our clients are drug and alcohol addicted women, women with up to two children under the age of ten, and women who are pregnant.

Staff

Employees at Mellwood are licensed and/or certified clinicians specializing in treating clients with substance abuse issues.

Program and Activities

In addition to individual and skill-based group therapy, Mellwood residents have family counseling and parenting classes available to them. Anger management training and relapse prevention programs may also be encouraged. Educational and vocational services are provided including a G.E.D. program through our partner, Ballau High School. Clients also participate in special activities including game nights, arts and crafts, field trips and beach days. Visiting lecturers from local nurses on child development, to DC Rape Crisis Center employees on safe dating are also highlights of the program. The Healthy Start program teaches residents about childhood development.
