Serving Our Veterans
As the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq continue to wind down, many veterans are returning home with post traumatic stress disorder. Drug and alcohol addiction is prevalent among veterans, especially in the homeless population. In the summer of 2010, Second Genesis was awarded a contract with the Department of Veterans Affairs to provide therapeutic and rehabilitative services to homeless veterans. The contract requests services for up to 25 veterans per day at Second Genesis’s mixed-gender facility in Crownsville, Maryland.
In addition to substance abuse and addiction issues, the homeless veterans served at the Crownsville facility may be experiencing any of the following conditions: a co-occurring disorder (mental health including PTS, PTSD, depression, schizophrenia, bi-polar disorder), physical health issues, grief, loss, and/or estrangement from loved ones, housing concerns, career development, self-esteem and confidence issues.
Second Genesis’ clients receive a complete treatment program which includes not only chemical dependence treatment, but also a psychiatric evaluation, /mental health treatment, family reunification services, counseling services, benefits coordination, and medical, mental health and recreation services in order to help them fully recover and return as healthy and productive citizens to their communities. As a result of this treatment model, over 75% of Second Genesis’ clients agency-wide complete treatment, which is twice the national average for comparable agencies.
Second Genesis has provided nationally-recognized substance-abuse and addiction treatment in the therapeutic community for the past 43 years. We take great pride in being able to serve the homeless veterans who have so selflessly served our country.
