Nature Education Classes at Mellwood Now
Date Posted: July 21, 2010
Our partnership with the Biophilia Foundation has gone so well with our Crownsville clients that it’s expanded to Mellwood!
Here’s a note from our very own Biophilia Fdtn. instructor Melissa:
I am really excited about working with Mellwood’s clients and look forward to making them more aware of the beauty of the natural world and increasing their concerns about its preservation. Gardening will be a large component of the curriculum as we build upon the vegetable garden that is presently under construction, and explore other means of growing our own food such as the ‘ square foot garden’ technique which employs small raised beds.
Clients will be introduced to horticultural methods such as plant propagation and garden maintenance which might be useful to them one day as they when seek employment Recycling and composting are two very important subjects that we will also explore and learn to practice.
The group will be exposed to environmental issues and current events that impact natural resources and wildlife through discussion and perhaps some videos. I will incorporate physical exercise in to each session. We will do LOTS of walking, some aerobics exercise, pilates, double dutch jump rope, softball, etc.
When you have some time please visit : http://www.biophilia.org to learn more about our organization and its mission. We are very happy that Mellwood has asked us to offer our program to its clients. It is most unfortunate that people today are becoming further and further alienated from the natural world. We are all part of it and we all have a major impact on it – often times for the worst due to lack of knowledge or simply not caring. In many cases, it is a situation beyond an individual’s control but what I hope to do is simply open some eyes to the fact that we are all connected in this “ web of life” and that every single living being, no matter how small, has a reason to exist and, yes, it does matter…
