2007

Second Genesis reinitiates the Project Threshold Strategic Outreach Project in the most needed areas of Washington DC for the third consecutive year.

2006

For the second time, Second Genesis received the highest three-year accreditation from the Commission on the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities.
Second Genesis launched the Justice and Healing Project to address the issues of Sexual Addiction in the Montgomery County facility.
In partnership with the State of Maryland Division of Corrections, Second Genesis also launched the Prison Assessment Program to facilitate and complete inmate assessments directly with the prisons.

2004

The DUI/DWI and Anger Management components were added to the organization’s Outpatient Treatment Services.

2002

The new residential program for Women & Their Children was opened at 2926 Harford Road, Baltimore, Maryland, in order to extend desperately needed services to that community.
Second Genesis extended outpatient services to Prince George’s County, Maryland, as they opened a new facility in Hyattsville, Maryland.
Martin O’Malley, Baltimore City Mayor, led the ribbon-cutting ceremony at the grand opening of the Women & Children program at Harford Road.
The High School Education Program was initiated in Montgomery County.
Second Genesis received the highest, three-year, accreditation from the Commission on the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).

2001

Second Genesis received a 1-year accreditation from the Commission on the Accreditation of Rehabilitative Facilities.

2000

Linda W. Cropp, Council of the District of Columbia Chairman, recognized Second Genesis for the successful treatment of 79% of those served.

1998

The Second Genesis Adolescent Outpatient Recovery Program opened at 1721 Elton Road in Silver Spring, Maryland.
The Montgomery County Chamber Workforce Corporation awarded Second Genesis, Inc. with the Workforce Development Leadership Award.
Crownsville (107 Circle Drive) devotes Anne Arundel North to Co-Occurring clients.

1997

The Adult Outpatient Program opened at 1320 Harvard Street N.W. in Washington, DC.

1994

Second Genesis celebrated its 25th anniversary!
In honor of the occasion, the state of Maryland, Washington DC, Virginia Fairfax County (VA), Arlington County (VA), Montgomery, Prince Georges, Anne Arundel County (MD), and Alexandria (VA) all proclaimed 1994 the “Year of Second Genesis”.
In Anne Arundel County, 107 Circle Drive (Crownsville, MD) was separated into two facilities.
Second Genesis was awarded a five-year grant to provide treatment for women and their dependent children (up to 10 years old) in the state of Maryland. The first residents were admitted to the facility in Prince George’s County on June 6, which is now named Second Genesis Mellwood House for Women and Their Children.

1992

Second Genesis EAST (Education, Addiction Services, Treatment) opened in Washington, DC on the St. Elizabeth’s Hospital Campus as the treatment component of the DC Initiative, a three-year federal research project on drug treatment strategies.

1991

Nellie Henken, Second Genesis employee, was named as a James Cash Penney Award Finalist for her extraordinary work.

1990

Former First Lady, Barbara Bush, led the opening ceremony of a new facility in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. William Donald Schaefer, Governor of Maryland, declared June 5 “Second Genesis Day”.

1988

A fifth therapeutic community opened at 107 Circle Drive in Anne Arundel County, Maryland.

1980

On behalf of the Hexagon Club, Rosalynn Carter donates the 25th annual revenue of the Hexagon Corporation to Second Genesis programs.
The Prince George’s County therapeutic community moved from Crain Highway to 4620 Mellwood Road in Upper Marlboro County, Maryland

1977

A therapeutic community opened at 1320 Harvard Street, N.W. in Washington, DC. This completed the greater Washington DC area of Maryland, Virginia and Washington, DC.

1976

Betty Ford congratulated Second Genesis for “providing hope to those whose lifestyles have become self-destructive.” Former First Lady Ford was speaking on behalf of the Hexagon Club of Washington, DC where the proceeds of their annual event were donated to Second Genesis.

1975

Second Genesis opened a fourth therapeutic community at 14701 Avery Road in Rockville, Maryland.

1973

A third residential therapeutic community opened at 1001 King Street in Alexandria, Virginia.

1972


Second Genesis expanded rehabilitation services to Prince George’s County, Maryland by opening a second therapeutic community at 301 Crain Highway in Upper Marlboro.

1971

Second Genesis separated from the Alexandria Community Mental Health Center to become Second Genesis, Inc., a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to serving the Greater Washington area.

1970

The first Second Genesis residential community was established in Alexandria, Virginia at 1013 King Street.

1969

Second Genesis was founded as the drug abuse treatment component of the Alexandria Community Mental Center.
The first drug abuse outpatient group was established at the Alexandria Community Mental Health Center in Virginia.
