Friends and Supporters of Second Genesis:

As many of you are aware, current state and local government budget issues and economic conditions have put a tremendous amount of pressure on the operations of Second Genesis over the past several years. Patient volumes and revenue declined dramatically and operating deficits forced the Board of Directors to make difficult decisions that were necessary to preserve the ability of Second Genesis to continue its important mission: “Help For Addiction, Hope For The Community”.

More specifically, the Board agreed last summer to suspend all operations and reduce its staff.  As of September 30, Second Genesis was no longer treating patients and had no employees.  The Board has been directing efforts to wind down operations, meet all obligations and manage remaining assets, which include cash balances and our Melwood Campus in Prince Georges County, Maryland. The Board will be exploring various strategic options for the Melwood Campus and is in the early phases of a strategic planning effort that will outline the future direction of Second Genesis.  Among the options being considered are funding a Second Genesis foundation to support various substance abuse organizations and research efforts, as well as partnership opportunities related to our mission.

On behalf of the Board of Second Genesis, I want to thank you for your loyal support and encourage you to periodically visit our website for updates on the progress of our planning efforts.  While these have been difficult times, we are optimistic about our future and look forward to serving our community for many years.  Please note our new mailing address and phone number and feel free to contact me or any other Board members if you have any questions or need additional information.
