We are pleased to announce the recipients of our 2021 Philanthropy Award: H.E. Sheikh Meshal Bin Hamad Al-Thani, Ambassador of the State of Qatar to the United States of America, and Mrs. Eva Al-Thani, for their support and dedication to helping families and individuals impacted by substance use disorders.

Second Genesis Foundation’s Philanthropy Award recognizes extraordinary individuals who have shown outstanding leadership in the area of philanthropy and who, through their giving, have significantly enriched our work within the prevention, education, treatment, and research related to substance use disorders.

The award was presented earlier this month at an intimate dinner at the Ambassadors residence.

Last week we headed out to Hagerstown, MD for a special visit to our partners at Brooke’s House, a long-term recovery center for women recovering from alcohol and substance abuse.

We were able to tour their newest social enterprise expansion at the South End Shopping Center, where they will soon open a coffee and chocolate shop for women recovering from substance and alcohol abuse to work.

The shop, which will be able to provide women with the skills they need to get their own job after they recover, is an extension of their state-of-the-art treatment and recovery services, committed to helping their residents live drug-free and productive lives.

The coffee shop is set to open in November.

Second Genesis Foundation is proud to partake in the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Red Ribbon Week campaign, an annual national health observance to promote drug-free living. This event brings focus and attention to drug education and prevention – not just during Red Ribbon Week, held on October 23-31, but also throughout the year.

As part of the campaign, individuals, families, and communities across the nation pledge to live a drug-free lifestyle, wear red ribbons, and participate in community-wide anti-drug events. Red Ribbon Week offers a great opportunity for parents, teachers, educators, and community organizations to raise awareness about substance abuse. As part of our mission to educate and assist the DMV community in the prevention and treatment of substance use disorders, we have partnered with The Biscuit Factory in the production of Written-Off, an independent feature documentary film project.

The series takes viewers to the epicenter of America’s struggle with opioid addiction, from the boardrooms of Big Pharma, to a distressed Virginia mining community, to the hallways of the DEA.

We are pleased to announce the creation of our Advisory Board, an essential initiative to help increase our important work in the Greater Washington area. The Advisory Board of Second Genesis Foundation is a volunteer group formed to help provide new insight, advice, and support to our executive staff and board.

The Advisory Board will serve as a critical community champion of the Second Genesis Foundation. Members of the Advisory Board share their social capital in service to our mission.
