Dear Subscriber First Name, As we are enjoying these last days of summer, students across the U.S. have started to return to school, many of them faced with anxiety, grief, and gaps in social skills. The debate is now if there will be enough school mental health resources to address their need. Even before COVID-19, as many as 1 in 6 young children had a diagnosed mental, behavioral or developmental disorder. New findings suggest a near doubling of rates of disorders such as anxiety and depression among children and adolescents during the pandemic. Multiple studies have already shown that rates of drug and alcohol abuse are on the rise during the pandemic, and there will be an increased need to help support students and families with drug prevention and intervention programs this year. Experts believe the collapsing of support systems, combined with job loss and an increasingly dangerous supply of illicit drugs, help account for the 93,000 fatal overdoses estimated to have taken place in 2020 — the deadliest year in an opioid epidemic that has claimed more than 900,000 lives. During this time of great need, we are determined to help provide additional support to individuals, families, and communities impacted by substance use disorders. Celebrating Red Ribbon Week
|
The Drug Enforcement Administration is hosting their annual Red Ribbon Week campaign, an annual national health observance to promote drug-free living. This event brings focus and attention to drug education and prevention – not just during Red Ribbon Week, held on October 23-31, but also throughout the year. As part of the campaign, individuals, families, and communities across the nation pledge to live a drug-free lifestyle, wear red ribbons, and participate in community-wide anti-drug events. Educational Screening for Classrooms

As part of our mission to educate and assist the DMV community in the prevention and treatment of substance use disorders, we have partnered with The Biscuit Factory in the production of Written-Off, an independent feature documentary film project. How does a smart, loving, promising kid move from acting in the high school play to putting a needle in his arm? WRITTEN OFF reveals that journey, in Matt’s own words. Behind the addiction, there is a person – all at once lovable and despicable, funny and pathetic, young and old, destructive and aware of his failings. Watch the trailer. WRITTEN OFF challenges the stigma of opiate addiction by unraveling the intricate web of a single addiction story and is now available as an educational video to be shared with students across the United States.
